Collection Profile for:
Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Massey Herbarium (VPI)
The small bryophyte collection at Virginia Tech consists of over 5500 specimens most of which were collected in Virginia. New accessions are growing the collection slowly. Many specimens from southwestern Virginia were collected by Douglas W. Ogle and identified by David Breil, dec'd, formerly at Longwood University. These specimens were formerly at Virginia Highlands Community College, transferred to VPI in 2003. Many Sphagnum specimens from across Virginia were determined by Lewis Anderson. Physiographically, the mountain region is well represented and in the 2010's-20's, Helen Hamilton donated thousands of specimens, mostly from the Coastal Plain, adding an important representation from that part of the state. VPI welcomes assistance with identification of additional unaccessioned specimens.
